Recherche

Nous étudions les adaptations uniques que différentes espèces végétales ont développées à travers l’évolution afin de survivre et croître dans des conditions environnementales variées. Ce faisant, nous découvrons les axes fondamentaux de variation fonctionnelle entre les espèces. Cela nous aide à comprendre comment les plantes fonctionnent dans leur environnement. Nous étudions aussi les facteurs qui influencent les changements de composition et de diversité végétale le long de gradients environnementaux, particulièrement ceux impliquant les ressources du sol. Pourquoi certaines espèces de plantes sont-elles plus abondantes que d’autres? Nos recherches en écologie des communautés ont des applications pour la conservation, car l’unicité de la composition végétale de même que la richesse en espèces sont deux critères primordiaux utilisés pour déterminer la valeur écologique des écosystèmes. Finalement, nous développons de nouvelles approches de télédétection de la biodiversité végétale spectrale, fonctionnelle et taxonomique, à l’aide d’imagerie à haute résolution acquise par avion ou par drone. La cartographie à haute résolution de la biodiversité végétale transformera l’écologie dans un futur proche, en nous permettant de transposer notre recherche à des échelles spatiales plus larges, lesquelles sont plus près de celles utilisées par les décideurs et gestionnaires du territoire pour la conservation.
