Organizing comittee

workshop – February 24, 2025

The workshop, which will take place on February 24, is organized in collaboration with Nature Conservancy Canada (NCC). The main theme of the day is “Maximizing Scientific Impact in Restoration and Protection in Quebec.”

Workshop Objectives

  • Identify ways in which biodiversity science can enhance the impact of conservation and restoration efforts in Quebec.
  • Contribute to better alignment between researchers, conservation organizations, and government agencies, particularly on themes such as identifying protected areas and OECMs (Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures), restoration, and indicators, to help achieve the targets of Axis 1 of the Nature 2030 Plan.
  • Promote stronger collaboration between researchers and conservation organizations to better address the needs and knowledge gaps of these organizations.

Keynote Speaker – February 25, 2025

Sean Hoban

Sean Hoban is a Tree Conservation Biologist at The Morton Arboretum in Chicago USA, and a faculty member at University of Chicago. Sean also has a leading role in the IUCN SSC Conservation Genetic Specialist Group, GEO BON, and the Coalition for Conservation Genetics.

He has a PhD from University of Notre Dame, and performed a postdoc with a European conservation genetics project and another postdoc at a National Science Foundation funded mathematical biology synthesis center. He has more than 100 publications.  His team focuses on advancing our understanding of the genetics and ecology of threatened plant species, leveraging large databases for macrogenetic analysis, developing science-based advice for botanic gardens, and bringing knowledge on adaptive capacity of populations to national and global policy. He has helped develop several novel methods for assessing genetic diversity conservation.

He regularly works with organizations like the Center for Plant Conservation, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, US Forest Service, and US Fish and Wildlife Service. He also has interests in seed dispersal, hybridization, and population size change over time. You can read more about his group at hobanlab.com.

Panels

Perspectives on Research, Applications, and Careers in Biodiversity Science

This panel will bring together experts from the QCBS to discuss the most exciting recent advancements and emerging challenges in biodiversity science. Panelists will share their perspectives on how far we’ve come, and what’s next for research and career development in the observation and monitoring of biodiversity, detection and forecasting of changes, and for supporting decisions with biodiversity science.

Science in Support of Informed Decision-Making

The panel “Science in Support of Informed Decision-Making” brings together three experts in decision-making: Thomas Mulcair, former federal and provincial MP and former leader of the New Democratic Party; Julie-Maude Normandin, the first-ever Chief Scientific Advisor for the City of Longueuil; and Philippe Simard, lecturer in applied politics at the Université de Sherbrooke and advisor at Copticom.

Together, they will share their experiences, insights, and opinions on the role and position of scientists in decision-making. How can information be presented to make it as understandable as possible? To whom should it be directed? How can other audiences and the media be engaged to bring scientific knowledge to the forefront of societal debates?

AI vs Statistics Are we witnessing a paradigm shift in the way we model ecological systems?

A panel discussion on the differences and overlaps in concepts and applications of artificial intelligence and statistics in ecology. Panelists will present the history of both fields and what they consider to be the future for each discipline. Contrasting perspectives and debates, stimulated by questions from the public, will end the session.
