Effects of Spring Conditions on Brood Abandonment in Tree Swallow
With climate change, birds have advance their laying dates, thus exposing themselves to harsh conditions such as cold snaps. These conditions increases the costs of reproduction, sometimes resulting in abandonment of the brood. Since survival of nestlings is essential for population growth of short-lived species, a brood abandonment can have a huge detrimental effect on decreasing populations of migratory birds.
