Project

Developpment of a standarised protocol for wetland restoration success monitoring
Québec has committed to achieving “no net loss” of wetlands through the Wetland and Waterbody Creation and Restoration Program. However, existing guidelines remain limited, particularly regarding the evaluation of ecological functions and services in created or restored wetlands. Developing a standardized and rigorous protocol would help ensure credible accountability and strengthen public trust in the program. This project aims to identify a set of key indicators to reliably assess ecological functions and services in marshes, swamps, wet meadows, and floodplains, to compare available methods for monitoring these indicators and recommend those that are scientifically sound, feasible, and adapted to the Québec context, and to explore the integration of emerging technologies, including remote sensing and drone imagery, to facilitate and improve post-restoration monitoring. To achieve these objectives, the project will rely on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature to identify four to six priority functional indicators, a comparative analysis of measurement methods including expert consultations, an assessment of the potential of remote sensing tools to monitor key parameters, and the development of standardized recommendations adapted to the different types of wetlands targeted by the program.
