Research

My research program aims to enhance our understanding of landscape multifunctionality, with a specific focus on water quality and land-use planning. It seeks to: i) Quantify how human activities alter nutrient flows in rivers, ii) Examine how landscape composition and configuration affect nutrient filtration and interact with other key functions such as flow regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity, and iii) Develop decision-support tools for planning land use to protect biodiversity and ensure the delivery of ecological services to populations. To achieve these objectives, we integrate long-term datasets, remote sensing, fieldwork, advanced statistical analysis, modeling, and participatory consultation methods. As Scientific Director of the Center for Applied Research on Biodiversity and Ecosystems (CRABE), I coordinate and contribute to initiatives that assist subnational governments and private sector stakeholders in incorporating nature into their decision-making processes.
