Economic assessment of ecosystem services in field crop in Quebec
Agri-environmental production systems represent an interesting alternative in the current climate context to meet global food needs. Quebec offers considerable potential for the development of such systems. However, this potential remains largely underexploited, partly due to a lack of practical and scientific knowledge regarding the economic, social, and environmental impacts of these practices. Within the framework of this research project, my objective is to shed light on ecosystem services (ES) such as regulation and provisioning services arising from various forms of agri-environmental production, with a specific focus on wheat production. To identify the most viable and sustainable agricultural practice in terms of ES, we will undertake an economic valuation of the ES provided by the different tested production scenarios. To do so, three approaches will be employed: a literature review, an economic evaluation of ES based on the cost-benefit method, and a preference analysis using choice modeling. First, the literature review will establish the theoretical and conceptual framework of agricultural ES, as well as the tools required for their economic assessment. Second, the choice modeling method will be applied to gather information on the preferences of Quebec’s population, with the aim of evaluating the non-market ES associated with the different wheat production scenarios. Third, we will conduct an economic valuation of the market ES of the various wheat production scenarios, primarily through cost-benefit analysis. This approach will provide a comprehensive portrait of the value of ES linked to different agricultural practices, while also helping to guide the design of questionnaires for the subsequent evaluation of ES through stated preference methods. Finally, we will identify the factors influencing the adoption of crop management practices among field crop producers in Quebec.
