Improving Tropical Tree Species Identification from Drone Photographs through Cross-Domain Adaptation with Herbarium Specimens
This project aims to develop a computer vision model that improves the identification of tropical trees in Panama using drone imagery and leveraging digitized herbarium specimens. Currently, my lab is working closely with Dr Helene Muller-Landau, Senior Scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), to acquire large volumes of drone imagery of tropical trees on Barro Colorado Island (BCI). These close-up photos will be labelled by expert botanists from STRI and will be used as the test set.
