Project

Predicting emergence dynamics of Common lamb's-quarters (Chenopodium album, L., CHEAL) in the context of climate change in Montérégie, QC.
The emergence dynamics of Common lamb’s-quarters (Chenopodium album, L., CHEAL) under climate change pose significant challenges to Quebec's agricultural sector, particularly in maize and soybean production. My PhD research aims to develop predictive models for CHEAL emergence by integrating experimental data, remote sensing technologies, and climate change scenarios within the Montérégie region of Quebec. By targeting weed emergence timing, the project seeks to optimize weed management practices, reduce herbicide reliance, and improve soil health. The study comprises three objectives: (1) Improving existing models for CHEAL emergence through experimental field data; (2) determining CHEAL emergence potential across Montérégie using satellite and geospatial tools; and (3) evaluating the effects of future climate scenarios on CHEAL emergence timing. Methodologies involve the collection and analysis of field data, the integration of remote sensing (e.g., Landsat and Sentinel), and the adaptation of existing emergence models under varying climatic conditions. Expected outcomes include reduced herbicide use, enhanced soil conservation strategies, and adaptive management practices tailored to local climatic realities. This research aligns with Quebec's Plan d’agriculture durable 2020–2030 by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and developing a decision support system for integrated weed management. The results aim to contribute to a resilient agricultural system by addressing the impacts of climate change on weed dynamics and improving the long-term productivity of Quebec’s farms.
