Research

My research group uses genomics techniques to assess the biocomplexity (number of populations, their sizes, and their connectivity) and adaptive potential of Arctic marine fishes. We work in collaboration with many national and international partners that provide samples from the circumpolar Arctic regions (e.g., Greenland halibut, Arctic cod among others). Our aim is to build primary ecological data on many poorly studied fishes, from which climate and ecosystem change sensitivity assessments can be made. This has timely implication for our understanding of climate change impacts on the world’s Arctic biodiversity. Another aspect of our work involves developing and applying bioinformatics tools (mostly in R) to manipulate and analyse genomic and other big data. Consequently, members of my group become proficient in code writing for data analysis and visualisation. We also use the data generated from our genomics work in forward-in-time modeling analyses predicting the impacts of changing environmental conditions on the genetic integrity and diversity of the characterised species.
