Son expérience principale est le travail d'analyse géographique de la biodiversité pour la prise de décision, elle a développé l'analyse des modèles macroécologiques dans le territoire colombien pour une meilleure définition des unités de gestion et elle travaille sur la production d'indicateurs de biodiversité pour des utilisateurs multiples. Maria Cecilia est chercheuse principale dans le programme d'évaluation et de surveillance de l'Institut Alexander von Humboldt, où elle travaille à l'amélioration des processus d'évaluation et de surveillance de la biodiversité.
