Biodiversity-based solutions for sustainable floodplain farmingConceiving a sustainable and multifunctional agriculture able to conciliate food production with biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service provision is a salient challenge. This is especially critical in cultivated floodplains where intensive agriculture practices often directly lead to aquatic biodiversity loss and water quality degradation, as observed in the Lake Saint-Pierre, Quebec (46°12′15″N, 72°49′56″W). Launched in 2018 by the Government of Quebec, the Lake Saint-Pierre Strategic Cluster is a research initiative gathering thirty research scientists for developing crops and agricultural practices adapted to regular flooding and likely to restore the Lake Saint-Pierre ecological integrity. For this, field experiments establishing agroecological practices in the littoral zone will be combined to biodiversity and ecosystem monitoring. As a scientific coordinator and post-doc fellow, I contribute to research design, management and communication.
