Linking historic water quality to phosphorus cycling in the Saint Lawrence Basin
While nutrients are integral to the functioning of ecological systems and food production, an over-abundance can cause grave damage to aquatic ecosystems. The agricultural landscape has a basic ability to buffer ecological change and maintain functioning. Tipping points occur when the landscape is no longer able to buffer change and the system dramatically changes, often to an unwanted state. My research is centered around the question of how agricultural landscapes in Quebec absorb phosphorus pressure and buffer unwanted tipping points in aquatic ecosystems. This encapsulates many factors such as hydrology, geochemistry, and aquatic ecology.
