Abstract submission instructions

Abstracts for oral presentations, speed talks and posters should be submitted through the online symposium registration form. The same instructions apply for all types of abstract:

  • Abstract submission deadline for oral presentations: January 14, 2024.
  • Abstract submission deadline for posters: January 14, 2024.
  • Abstract acceptance announcement: January 21, 2024.
  • Abstracts should not exceed 250 words.
  • Tables or figures should not be submitted with the abstract.
  • The presenting author must be registered for the conference.

Sending an abstract recognizes the right of the QCBS to publish the abstract on its website unless an exemption is claimed in writing in advance.

Speed talks format

  • Students who are in the early stages of an M.Sc. or Ph.D program and who have few results to present are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for a speed talk.
  • Speed talks are a novel and efficient format for presenting at a conference. At the QCBS symposium, each speed talk speaker will be given a maximum of 4 minutes. Speed talks can be supported by a very small number of slides (5-7 slides maximum) and should highlight important points of the research project such as its objectives, key findings, and one summary figure. Presentation of methodology and context should be kept minimal.
  • Presenters of speed talks can, and are encouraged to, also present a poster. Speed talks could then serve as an invitation to visit the poster and extend the discussion on the research project.
  • The title and abstract must be submitted in the same language (English or French) as the one that will be used in the oral presentation.
  • Slides must be written in the other language (English or French). Consult the list of glossaries and dictionaries for help with translating biodiversity terms.
  • Due to meeting room and computer equipment constraints, speakers will not be allowed to use their personal computer for slide projection.
  • Presenters will need to upload their presentation in PPT or PDF format to a shared folder, the link to which will be provided to you.
  • It is mandatory for speakers who are recipients of QCBS awards and grants to add the QCBS logo on the first slide.

Oral presentations format

  • An oral presentation should last a maximum of 12 minutes and will be followed by 2 minutes of questions from the audience.

  • Slides must be written in the other language (English or French). Consult the list of glossaries and dictionaries for help with translating biodiversity terms.
  • Due to computer equipment constraints, speakers will not be allowed to use their personal computer for slide projection.
