Data simulation workshop

Monday, November 16 2026 09:00AM-05:00PM to Tuesday 17 November 2026 09:00-17:00

UQAM (Pavillion Science Biologiques à Campus Science, Metro Place-des-Arts) ou en ligne

Language of the workshop: English/Anglais

Workshop led by:

Dr. Sacha C. Engelhardt, PhD.

Workshop target group:

Graduate students, postdocs and researchers interested in learning to data simulation.

Goals of the workshop:

Validating linear mixed models for highly complex datasets, increasingly requires running simulations, whether to diagnose problems with residuals or to estimate statistical power. The workshop will focus on simulations with linear models with a Gaussian error distribution and with a binomial error distribution. Each day will include a basic overview of linear models. You will learn: 1) the functions used to perform simulations, 2) how to perform simulations, 3) how to parameterize variables and simulate responses, 4) how to perform power analyses of linear (mixed models) from simple linear regression to generalized linear mixed models, and 5) how to simulate the type I error rate.

Requirements:

  1. A knowledge of coding in R using base R, lm, glm, and generalized linear models using the lme4 package.
  2. A knowledge of linear (mixed) models with a Gaussian error distribution and with a binomial error distribution.
  3. Arrive at the workshop with the lme4, parallel, and kyotil R packages installed, i.e. installed prior to the start of the workshop.
