A connected protected area network for Quebec: a multi-species approach to support Quebec’s “30×30” protected area target
The protection and restoration of connectivity is a key feature of the KM-GBF, in particular the need to establish well-connected protected areas. To date, protected area planning has been ad hoc and opportunistic and not well-guided by movement needs of species and the importance of maintaining dynamic flows of life that underpin shifting patterns of biodiversity, i.e., ecological connectivity. Currently, on average across all nations, only 11% of protected area networks are connected. We have developed a methodology to guide protected area planning focused on calculating and prioritizing the connectivity of Quebec’s protected area network. This method uses the network property called minimum spanning tree (MST). The MST identifies the parsimonious subset of network links (least-cost corridors) which connect all nodes (protected areas) in the network while minimising total movement costs. Given differences in species’ dispersal abilities and habitat needs, it is important to identify species-explicit MSTs to achieve a global MST that meets the needs of many species. A species-explicit approach is expected to improve the realised connectivity of the protected area network and assessment of its changing importance over time.
