Community-Centered Approaches to Sustainable Water Management: The Case of Rwanda's Volcano Community
This research study investigates Rwanda’s community-centered approach to sustainable water management, where local solutions are tailored to specific contexts using the concept of Regional Innovation Ecosystems. It focuses on three core areas. First, it examines how actors within the Volcano Community Resilient Project (VCRP) develop solutions to flood risk and soil erosion, and how they simultaneously cooperate and compete in this process. Second, it explores how the different actors in the VCRP network to collaborate to drive innovation activities. Third, it analyzes how these locally developed solutions become institutionalized as enduring organizational practices. By examining how water management challenges foster cross-sectoral collaboration and enable the development of place-based innovations, this research offers insights that contribute to both theory and practice in sustainability and innovation studies.
