The functions, drivers and significance of fine-root trait variation from subindividual to ecosystem scalesFine roots are responsible for water and nutrient uptake, and thus support all other plant functions like photosynthesis and growth. However, fine root functions, trade-offs, and responses to environmental heterogeneity are enigmatic, hindering our ability to fully understand plant functioning and its impacts on climate change. My research is focused on integrating physiological traits into functional trade-offs, determining the drivers of fine-root function and the spatial scales at which they manifest, and exploring how fine-root diversity could contribute to species coexistence with an emphasis on niche partitioning of soil nutrient forms.
