Detection of exotic invasive aquatic plants through environmental DNA
Early detection of exotic invasive species is crucial to limit the negative impacts on biodiversity and human activities. The MELCCFP along with local organisations such as the St. Lawrence ZIP committees, RAPPEL - Coopérative de solidarité en protection de l’eau, Société des établissements de plein air du Québec, and other riparian associations and municipalities, has set up strategies meant to detect, identify and report observations of aquatic exotic invasive plants. Part of it is focused on developing robust detection tools based on environmental DNA (eDNA) that would allow for early detection without requiring direct observation and identification. My post-doctoral project aims to develop the molecular tools and sampling protocols to detect and distinguish invasive macrophytes such as Myriophyllum spicatum in freshwater systems in the province of Quebec.
