Development of molecular markers to assess the toxic response of seabirds to PFAS using innovative multi-omics techniques.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as eternal pollutants, represent a class of anthropogenic chemicals originating from a multitude of products used in everyday life. Due to their widespread use and persistence in the environment, PFAS are found in water, land and air in many regions around the globe, leading to accumulation of these substances in animals and humans. Recent studies have shown that PFAS have a harmful effect on the environment, as well as on animal and human health. My research project will identify the effect of PFAS on seabirds, particularly gannets. It will involve developing molecular markers to assess toxic responses in individuals, as well as developing multi-omics techniques to increase the ethics of ecotoxicology analyses.
