PROSPECTS FOR CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE IN WEST AFRICA: ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS AND SUSTAINABILITY OF ADAPTATION STRATEGIES IN CEREAL PRODUCTION IN BENIN
This research project aims to study the impact of climate change on cereal production in Benin, as well as the effectiveness and sustainability of adaptation strategies implemented by farmers. Here is a summary of the specific objectives of the study: (i) Analyze the effects of climate change on the production of cereals such as rice, sorghum, and maize in Benin. This involves assessing how climate variations affect the quantity and quality of crops. (ii) Examine current agricultural practices in the region and evaluate their level of adoption by farmers. This could include the use of specific techniques, climate-resistant seeds, or other adaptation methods. (iii) Analyze the factors influencing farmers' choices of adaptation strategies and evaluate how these strategies affect cereal production. This could include considerations such as costs, resource availability, technical knowledge, etc. (iv) Evaluate the sustainability of adaptation strategies implemented by cereal producers in Benin. This involves considering not only their short-term effectiveness but also their ability to maintain agricultural productivity while preserving natural resources and minimizing long-term negative environmental impacts. In summary, this research project aims to provide essential information for developing more climate-resilient agricultural policies and practices in the West African region, focusing specifically on cereal production in Benin.
