Identifying priority interventions in the fight against harmful blue-green algal blooms in Missisquoi Bay
Cyanobacteria (aka blue-green algae) occur naturally at low levels in water bodies and are normally not a cause for concern. But given enough warmth (e.g. exacerbated by climate change), light, and nutrients (e.g. from agricultural or municipal releases) some cyanobacteria bloom in aquatic ecosystems – and frequently produce and release cyanotoxins. The main objective of this project to is to identify and prioritize preventive land management measures in the Missisquoi watershed to reduce nutrient pollution and harmful algal blooms. Our approach combines policy and land use scenarios modelling developed through consultation of stakeholders with cost benefit analysis to identify viable land management and regulatory frameworks to protect inland water bodies which are essential for the health of the environment, wildlife and humans.
