ResearchThe motivating aim of my research is to understand how evolutionary processes have generated the wondrous diversity of biological features observed in the natural world. Why is it that some species reproduce asexually, while most reproduce sexually? Why do some organisms have large genomes while closely related species have small ones? Why do some species choose to mate with very similar partners, while others avoid them? These are some of the fundamental questions that my research has aimed to resolve, using a combination of mathematical theory, statistical inference, and evolutionary experiments.Examples of species studiedCrassostrea gigas Publications38- Variety is the spice of life: nongenetic variation in life histories influences population growth and evolvability Journal Article Forsythe A B , Otto S P , Nelson W A , Day T , 2024 Journal of Evolutionary Biology (Date Added: 2024-11-14) 37- Planting long-lived trees in a warming climate: Theory shows the importance of stage-dependent climatic tolerance Journal Article Erlichman A , Sandell L , Otto S P , Aitken S N , Ronce O , 2024 Evolutionary Applications (Date Added: 2024-06-24) 36- Endemic does not mean constant as SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve Journal Article Otto S P , MacPherson A , Colijn C , 2024 Evolution (Date Added: 2024-06-08) 35- Endemic does not mean constant as SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve Journal Article Otto S P , MacPherson A , Colijn C , 2024 Evolution (Date Added: 2024-06-08) 34- Endemic does not mean constant as SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve Journal Article Otto S P , MacPherson A , Colijn C , 2024 Evolution (Date Added: 2024-06-08) 33- Endemic does not mean constant as SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve Journal Article Otto S P , MacPherson A , Colijn C , 2024 Evolution (Date Added: 2024-06-08) 32- Modelling daisy quorum drive: A short-term bridge across engineered fitness valleys Journal Article de Haas F J H , Kläy L , Débarre F , Otto S P , 2024 PLoS Genetics (Date Added: 2024-05-25) 31- Corrigendum to “Fixation and effective size in a haploid–diploid population with asexual reproduction” [Theoretical Population Biology 143 (2022) 30–45, (S0040580921000769), (10.1016/j.tpb.2021.11.002)] Journal Erratum Bessho K , Otto S P , 2024 Theoretical Population Biology (Date Added: 2024-05-08) 30- The prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbiome of Pacific oyster spat is shaped by ocean warming but not acidification Journal Article Zhong K X , Chan A M , Collicutt B , Daspe M , Finke J F , Foss M , Green T J , Harley C D G , Hesketh A V , Miller K M , Otto S P , Rolheiser K , Saunders R , Sutherland B J G , Suttle C A , 2024 Applied and Environmental Microbiology (Date Added: 2024-04-26) 29- When and how can we predict adaptive responses to climate change?
