EducationB.Sc. University of Alberta, 1981 M.A. University of Alberta, 1983 Ph.D. University of Alberta, 1987 Post-doc McGill University, 1989 Post-doc Harvard University, 1993 ResearchAt the most general level, my research uses experimental and observational approaches to determine how plant communities influence animals (population regulation, determinants of group size) and how animals influence their environment (herbivory, seed dispersal, community restoration). This research has often been developed to permit direct application to conservation. Much of my research has focused on primates, as they are a group of animals that often permit detailed observations of behavior and ecology. I have conducted fieldwork in Canada, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, and now have established a long-term research program in Kibale National Park, Uganda.Currently, the research of my students, collaborators, and myself focuses on three themes: 1) Determinants of Animal Abundance: Nutrition, Stress, and Disease 2) Tropical Tree Dispersal, Regeneration, and Diversity 3) Determinants of Animal Group Size Prizes and honoursFellow of the Royal Society of Canada Canada Research Chair University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship Award Term Professorship, University of Florida Anderson Teacher Scholar QCBS studentsPrevious students (since 2009)Urs KalbitzerPostdoctoral fellow Sharon KesslerPostdoctoral fellow Rafael Reyna-HurtadoPostdoctoral fellow Valerie SchoofPostdoctoral fellow Sarah TurnerPostdoctoral fellow Kim ValentaPostdoctoral fellow Michael WassermanPostdoctoral fellow Tyler BonnellPh.D. Ria GhaiPh.D. Jan GogartenPh.D. Dipto SarkarPh.D. Stacey HodderM.Sc.
