Mutational & transcriptional dynamics of small & large-scale mutations in the Nuclear and Mitochondrial Genomes of Daphnia pulex in Mutation Accumulation (MA) lines
My project, "Mutational & transcriptional dynamics of small & large-scale mutations in the Nuclear and Mitochondrial Genomes of Daphnia pulex in Mutation Accumulation (MA) lines," is a comprehensive ongoing study conducted at the Department of Biology, McGill University. This research utilizes a mutation accumulation (MA) experiment of Daphnia pulex to assess the key parameters of mitochondrial genome evolution. A crucial aspect of my project is to track and evaluate the mutation accumulation in the mitochondrial genomes of Daphnia pulex with low effective population sizes (Ne) over generations, providing a comprehensive evaluation of how deleterious mutation accumulation in the genomes can pose an extinction risk to species with small populations over time, thereby impact their monitoring and conservation efforts. Insights from this study are crucial for developing a robust analytical framework for biomonitoring, which can improve our understanding of biodiversity conservation and population health for species at risk.
