ÉducationRechercheLes dernières décennies ont vécu une augmentation d’intérêt de la conservation de la biologie. Alors que les scientifiques d’aujourd’hui réalisent le besoin d’adresser la perte rapide de diversité biologique, ils ne sont pas toujours équipés avec les outils appropriés pour le faire. Les plantes et les vertébrés vasculaires on généralement reçu la majorité de l’attention en termes d’efforts de la conservation, alors que les taxons diversifié en espèces comme les insectes, restent ignorés. La raison principale pour cette exclusion est que les insectes traînent derrière la majorité des autres groupes en termes d’expertise taxonomique. À une époque où la richesse totale des espèces est souvent ce qui mesure les efforts de conservation et de gestion, c’est ironique que le groupe d’animal le plus riche en espèces soit exclu de la majorité des études de biodiversité. Pour tenter de corriger cet obstacle taxonomique, Dr Savage effectue des recherches sur la systématique et la biodiversité de l’ordre des diptères. Son programme de recherche à l’objectif de documenter la systématique et la biodiversité des diptères dans différents habitats, en utilisant un grand nombre d’approches analytiques et conceptuelles. Des échantillonnages effectués sur le terrain au sud-est du Québec, et de l’Ontario, des régions arctiques de l’Amérique du Nord et de l’Eurasie du Nord permettront Dr Savage de combler les lacunes dans les dossiers de distribution de plusieurs espèces incluant quelques nouveaux, et de documenter la diversité biologique dans les écosystèmes de l’hémisphère nord.
