Project

Conservation and restoration in an urban context
My aim is to improve the selection of areas for potential restoration based in the demand and supply of ecosystem services. Considering the protection and restoration of vacant lots may improve the efficiency in urban conservation planning. In this study, we aim to evaluate the cost-benefits of including vacant lots in systematic conservation planning focusing in the conservation of ecosystem services, as well as the restoration of bundles of demanded ecosystem services in vacant lots. We will use Marxan with Zones to identify conservation and restoration priorities based on the flow of six ecosystem services provided by urban forests and vacant lots in the agglomeration of Quebec (temperature regulation, carbon storage, water flow regulation, vegetable gardens pollination, recreation and aesthetical appreciation). We expect to create a guideline for vacant lots management in urban environments aiming to maximize the delivery of ecosystem services and biodiversity in urban contexts.
