Ingo est am\u00e9nagiste et phyto\u00e9cologiste. Sa recherche se concentre dans trois domaines : (i) les patrons et m\u00e9canismes de la biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine, (ii) les impacts des plantes invasives dans et \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur des villes, et (iii) le d\u00e9veloppement d&rsquo;approches afin d\u2019accroitre les fonctions li\u00e9es \u00e0 la biodiversit\u00e9 dans les infrastructures vertes urbaines. Il est aussi impliqu\u00e9 b\u00e9n\u00e9volement comme Commissaire de l\u2019\u00e9tat en conservation de la nature et en am\u00e9nagement du territoire de l\u2019\u00e9tat f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de Berlin. Cette fonction lui permet de s\u2019impliquer au sein de nombreux processus de d\u00e9veloppement de l\u2019infrastructure verte de Berlin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a id=\"ingop\"><\/a><strong>L\u2019int\u00e9gration de la conservation de la biodiversit\u00e9 dans le d\u00e9veloppement urbain: l\u2019exemple de Berlin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dans un monde de plus en plus urbanis\u00e9, deux questions \u00e9mergent: comment les utilisations du territoire peuvent-elle contribuer \u00e0 la conservation de la biodiversit\u00e9 dans les villes et comment la biodiversit\u00e9 peut-elle \u00eatre int\u00e9gr\u00e9e au d\u00e9veloppement urbain? Les approches conventionnelles de conservation en milieu urbain se concentrent sur la protection ou la restauration de milieux naturels r\u00e9siduels. L\u2019exemple de Berlin illustre que les \u00e9l\u00e9ments naturels ainsi que les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes modifi\u00e9s par l\u2019homme tels les parcs et les nouveaux habitats industriel-urbains peuvent avoir une richesse biotique importante, bien que pr\u00e9sentant des fonctions \u00e9cologiques diff\u00e9rentes. \u00c0 Berlin ce constat a men\u00e9 \u00e0 une diversification des strat\u00e9gies de conservation bas\u00e9es sur principalement trois approches : (i) la protection de zones de conservation depuis le d\u00e9but du 20e si\u00e8cle incluant des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes humanis\u00e9s; (ii) l\u2019int\u00e9gration de la conservation et des enjeux sociaux dans les outils d\u2019am\u00e9nagement \u00e0 partir de la fin des ann\u00e9es 1980; (iii) l\u2019inclusion des parties prenantes dans le d\u00e9veloppement et la mise en \u0153uvre de strat\u00e9gies de biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine qui couvrent toutes les utilisations du territoire (depuis 2010). L\u2019exp\u00e9rience de Berlin illustre que la coop\u00e9ration entre la science, les ONG et les politiciens peut mener \u00e0 un d\u00e9veloppement urbain ax\u00e9 sur la biodiversit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a id=\"willb\"><\/a>Le Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Williams est un \u00e9cologiste travaillant principalement dans les milieux urbains. Pour lui, les milieux urbains repr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 la fois la source de la grande majorit\u00e9 des probl\u00e8mes environnementaux mondiaux et le plus grand espoir de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 pour un avenir durable. Par l\u2019entremise de sa recherche, Nick tente de mieux comprendre les patrons de biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine et les processus \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques tout en d\u00e9veloppant des solutions appliqu\u00e9es afin de r\u00e9duire les impacts n\u00e9gatifs de l\u2019urbanisation sur la perte de biodiversit\u00e9, les \u00eelots de chaleur, le ruissellement des eaux pluviales et les \u00e9missions de C02. Sa recherche en biodiversit\u00e9 se concentre sur la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation et particuli\u00e8rement, sur les prairies naturelles et les traits fonctionnels des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux. Il a aussi travaill\u00e9 sur les mammif\u00e8res, les mollusques et de plus en plus sur les insectes. Avec ses coll\u00e8gues en sciences sociales, Dr Williams a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 l\u2019aspect le plus complexe des environnements urbains- les humains! En 2007, il a \u00e9tabli un programme de recherche afin de d\u00e9velopper et d\u2019\u00e9valuer les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices des infrastructures vertes, et plus particuli\u00e8rement, des toits verts comme strat\u00e9gie d\u2019adaptation contre les impacts des changements climatiques pour les villes australiennes. Avec ses coll\u00e8gues Steve Livesly et John Rayner, Nick dirige le Green Infrastructure Research Group (GIRG) \u00e0 l\u2019University of Melbourne. Ses projets r\u00e9cents incluent la quantification des b\u00e9n\u00e9fices en terme de biodiversit\u00e9 des espaces verts urbains tels les jardins, les parcs et terrains de golf, le d\u00e9veloppement de lignes directrices pour minimiser les effets de l\u2019\u00eelot de chaleur urbain et l\u2019\u00e9valuation de l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 des programmes de jardinage pour la faune. Le Dr Williams a publi\u00e9 plus de 40 articles scientifiques et pr\u00e9sente r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement ses travaux \u00e0 des conf\u00e9rences nationales et internationales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a id=\"willp\"><\/a><strong>Accro\u00eetre les habitats urbains pour la biodiversit\u00e9 avec les infrastructures vertes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Puisqu\u2019il est peu probable que de nouveaux habitats soient cr\u00e9\u00e9s, la conservation et l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de la biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine d\u00e9pendra sur la modification d\u2019infrastructures vertes existantes. L\u2019infrastructure urbaine verte, les cours r\u00e9sidentielles, les aires de r\u00e9cr\u00e9ation, les arbres le long des rues, les jardins de pluie et les toits verts qui composent nos villes peuvent supporter une portion substantielle de la biodiversit\u00e9 existante. Par contre, les esp\u00e8ces qui y sont pr\u00e9sentes ont tendance \u00e0 \u00eatre limit\u00e9es \u00e0 celles qui peuvent tol\u00e9rer les habitats urbains modifi\u00e9s. Nous avons compl\u00e9t\u00e9 une s\u00e9rie de sondages sur la biodiversit\u00e9 dans les jardins r\u00e9sidentiels, les golfs urbains, les petits parcs et les toits verts de Melbourne afin de lier la diversit\u00e9 d\u2019esp\u00e8ces aux types et caract\u00e9ristiques des habitats. Les terrains de golf sont d\u2019importants r\u00e9servoirs de biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine, ayant la plus grande richesse en esp\u00e8ces d\u2019oiseaux, d\u2019insectes mang\u00e9s par les chauves-souris, et d\u2019abeilles ainsi que forte abondance de col\u00e9opt\u00e8res et d\u2019h\u00e9mipt\u00e8res. Une plus grande complexit\u00e9 de la structure v\u00e9g\u00e9tative de plantes indig\u00e8nes dans ces infrastructures expliquerait ce r\u00e9sultat. Ainsi, l\u2019ajout de plantes indig\u00e8nes dans les infrastructures vertes afin de diversifier la structure v\u00e9g\u00e9tative ainsi que la modification des pratiques de gestion induisant la simplification des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes urbains devraient donc am\u00e9liorer la biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine. Un projet de recherche et de sensibilisation \u00e0 l\u2019importance de la diversit\u00e9 en ville \/ Alain Paquette, Christian Messier et Nathalie Lapointe<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">D\u00e8s 2009 nous avons \u00e9tabli \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al le premier d&rsquo;une s\u00e9rie de dispositifs exp\u00e9rimentaux sur la biodiversit\u00e9 et les fonctions des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes forestiers. Le r\u00e9seau IDENT (<em>International Diversity Experiment Network with Trees<\/em>) en contient d\u00e9j\u00e0 six, en Am\u00e9rique du Nord et en Europe. Le premier, \u00e9tablit \u00e0 Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, compte plus de 12,000 arbres de 19 esp\u00e8ces plant\u00e9s en communaut\u00e9s variant en nombre d&rsquo;esp\u00e8ces (1 \u00e0 12), composition et diversit\u00e9 fonctionnelle. Les r\u00e9sultats d\u00e9montrent que la croissance et les fonctions de l\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me sont am\u00e9lior\u00e9es avec une augmentation de la diversit\u00e9. L&rsquo;objectif du projet Ahuntsic-Cartierville est d\u2019amener les gens \u00e0 mieux consid\u00e9rer l\u2019importance du choix de l\u2019arbre et d\u2019une diversit\u00e9 d\u2019esp\u00e8ces ayant des caract\u00e9ristiques \u00e9cologiques vari\u00e9es afin de maximiser les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices importants rendus par ceux-ci en ville, notamment sur la sant\u00e9 humaine. L\u2019installation est int\u00e9gr\u00e9e au Parcours Gouin et \u00e0 la Maison Verte d\u2019Ahuntsic-Cartierville, un projet de conception int\u00e9gr\u00e9e. Le dispositif, install\u00e9 au printemps 2015, inclura le millioni\u00e8me arbre plant\u00e9 pour la science du r\u00e9seau TreeDivNet, auquel IDENT est int\u00e9gr\u00e9. L\u2019installation, en spirale, propose un parcours le long duquel le visiteur fera l\u2019exp\u00e9rience d\u2019une diversit\u00e9 grandissante d\u2019esp\u00e8ces mais aussi de formes et de fonctions. De l\u2019animation \u00e0 la fois fixe et interactive sera aussi propos\u00e9e, de m\u00eame que des mesures continues et ponctuelles des effets de la diversit\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>10h50: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/qcbs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Bellemare.pdf\"><span class=\"clickthis\">Dynamique \u00e9cologique et biodiversit\u00e9 des ruisseaux urbains&nbsp;: le cas de Laval \/ Marie-Christine Bellemare et Beatrix Beisner<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">Les cours d\u2019eau en milieu urbain ont subi \u00e0 travers les derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies de larges perturbations de nature anthropique. Redressement, d\u00e9viation, canalisation, enrochement, certains ruisseaux sont devenus des d\u00e9charges \u00e0 ciel ouvert alors que d\u2019autres sont tout simplement disparus sous les projets de d\u00e9veloppement. Dans la ville de Laval, encore aujourd\u2019hui, les travaux effectu\u00e9s dans les cours d\u2019eau continuent d\u2019\u00eatre r\u00e9alis\u00e9s dans une perspective unilat\u00e9rale d\u2019\u00e9coulement de l\u2019eau dans le but de r\u00e9duire les risques d\u2019inondations des quartiers. Quels sont les effets de cette pratique sur la dynamique \u00e9cologique des cours d\u2019eau suite \u00e0 ces travaux? Puisqu\u2019au-del\u00e0 de leurs fonctions hydriques, les cours d\u2019eau en milieu urbain peuvent et doivent \u00e9galement contribuer \u00e0 l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau et \u00e0 la conservation de la diversit\u00e9 biologique des zones urbaines, et pour ce faire, ces \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes doivent \u00eatre fonctionnels. Mieux prot\u00e9ger ces \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes, pr\u00e9venir leur d\u00e9gradation et restaurer ces milieux n\u00e9cessite alors une \u00e9valuation de leur \u00e9tat \u00e9cologique. C\u2019est dans cet objectif que s\u2019inscrit la pr\u00e9sente recherche, qui vise \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser l\u2019\u00e9valuation du niveau de sant\u00e9 \u00e9cologique et de biodiversit\u00e9 des ruisseaux urbains lavallois, sur la base d\u2019indicateurs \u00e9cologiques et physiques mis en lien avec leur niveau d\u2019urbanisation.&nbsp; Le projet s\u2019\u00e9chelonnant sur un minimum de 10 ans est compos\u00e9 de deux volets&nbsp;: (i) l\u2019\u00e9valuation de l\u2019\u00e9tat \u00e9cologique des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes et (ii) la restauration \u00e9ventuelle de certains sites en collaboration avec la ville de Laval, la Fondation de la faune du Qu\u00e9bec et le minist\u00e8re des For\u00eats, de la Faune et des Parcs du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>11h10: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/qcbs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Deslauriers-and-Jaeger.pdf\"><span class=\"clickthis\">How can the connectivity of the greenway network in Southwest Montreal be improved? Scenarios for enhancing the wellbeing of biodiversity and humans \/ Megan Deslauriers et Jochen A.G. Jaeger<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">La connectivit\u00e9 est d\u00e9finie par Taylor et al. (1993) comme \u00e9tant le \u00ab<em>degr\u00e9 avec lequel le paysage facilite ou entrave le mouvement entre les parcelles d\u2019habitats\u00bb<\/em>.Elle peut \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e pour \u00e9valuer dans quelle mesure l\u2019environnement b\u00e2ti permet \u00e0 la faune et aux humains de se d\u00e9placer entre les habitats et les sites de loisirs. Dans le Sud-Ouest de Montr\u00e9al, un r\u00e9seau de voies vertes a \u00e9t\u00e9 propos\u00e9 afin d\u2019am\u00e9liorer l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ces espaces. Les plans de d\u00e9veloppement r\u00e9sidentiel sur le site du Club de Golf Meadowbrook pourraient toutefois compromettre la viabilit\u00e9 de ce r\u00e9seau en diminuant l\u2019acc\u00e8s aux habitats de haute qualit\u00e9 ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019espace public. Dans cette \u00e9tude, la connectivit\u00e9 du r\u00e9seau a \u00e9t\u00e9 mesur\u00e9e en utilisant la taille effective de maille (meff); une mesure utilis\u00e9e comme indicateur pour l\u2019Indice de biodiversit\u00e9 urbaine (<em>CBI Index<\/em>). Nous avons appliqu\u00e9 cette m\u00e9thode pour \u00e9valuer le r\u00f4le du golf Meadowbrook dans la connectivit\u00e9 du r\u00e9seau de voies vertes de l\u2019arrondissement du Sud-Ouest et de l\u2019effet que son d\u00e9veloppement aurait selon diff\u00e9rents sc\u00e9narios. Les niveaux actuels et futurs potentiels de connectivit\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mesur\u00e9s \u00e0 la fois pour les espaces utilis\u00e9s par la faune et ceux utilis\u00e9s par les r\u00e9sidents. Actuellement, les espaces disponibles pour la faune sont limit\u00e9es en raison de leur isolement et des structures pr\u00e9sentes, telles que les routes, entravant la circulation entre les habitats. Toutefois, l\u2019identification de sites \u00e0 \u00eatre restaur\u00e9s ou cr\u00e9\u00e9s comme habitats ou zones de loisirs met en \u00e9vidence la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019augmenter sensiblement la connectivit\u00e9 du r\u00e9seau dans l\u2019avenir. Le golf Meadowbrook \u00e0 un grand potentiel de servir comme une composante essentielle du r\u00e9seau de voies vertes dans le futur du secteur, sa destruction serait donc n\u00e9faste dans un contexte de connectivit\u00e9. Nous recommandons que les urbanistes consid\u00e8rent le grand potentiel de ce site dans leur plan d\u2019am\u00e9nagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>11h30:<\/strong> <span class=\"clickthis\">Biodiversit\u00e9 des abeilles sauvages dans deux villes qu\u00e9b\u00e9coises et contribution de l&rsquo;agriculture urbaine\/ \u00c9tienne Normandin, Nicolas J. Vereecken, Chris Buddle, Val\u00e9rie Fournier<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">L&rsquo;urbanisation est l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 humaine contribuant le plus \u00e0 la perte d&rsquo;habitats r\u00e9sultant \u00e0 l&rsquo;extirpation d&rsquo;une grande quantit\u00e9 d&rsquo;esp\u00e8ces localement. Les abeilles sauvages sont les pollinisateurs les plus r\u00e9pandus, mais encore trop peu est connu sur les m\u00e9canismes de l\u2019urbanisation qui affectent les communaut\u00e9s d\u2019abeilles sauvages et les types d\u2019espaces verts qui contribuent le plus \u00e0 leur conservation. Au Canada, aucune \u00e9tude d\u2019ampleur n\u2019a encore \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e sur ce sujet. Notre \u00e9tude avait comme objectif de d\u00e9crire et comparer la diversit\u00e9, la composition et la dynamique de leurs communaut\u00e9s dans deux villes, Montr\u00e9al et Qu\u00e9bec. Ces composantes de la biodiversit\u00e9 sont mesur\u00e9es dans trois types d\u2019habitats, soit les cimeti\u00e8res, les jardins communautaires et les parcs urbains, puis leur valeur pour la conservation est discut\u00e9e. Les abeilles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 captur\u00e9es aux pi\u00e8ges bols et au filet entomologique en 2012 et 2013 dans 46 sites\/ann\u00e9e. Un total de 32 237 sp\u00e9cimens r\u00e9partis dans 200 esp\u00e8ces et 6 familles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9s. Malgr\u00e9 la bonne uniformit\u00e9 des communaut\u00e9s, la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019esp\u00e8ces dominantes et exotiques est importante. De plus, l\u2019analyse de la stabilit\u00e9 spatio-temporelle des communaut\u00e9s d\u2019abeilles sauvages d\u00e9montre que leur dynamique est propre \u00e0 chaque ville. Ceci d\u00e9montre que l\u2019environnement urbain peut abriter une diversit\u00e9 notable d\u2019abeilles sauvages, mais avoir un effet structurel sur leurs communaut\u00e9s. Finalement, nos r\u00e9sultats r\u00e9v\u00e8lent que les jardins communautaires abritent la diversit\u00e9 fonctionnelle la plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Il est donc n\u00e9cessaire de d\u00e9velopper les connaissances sur les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes aquatiques dans les grandes villes afin de s\u00e9lectionner les meilleurs bioindicateurs pour \u00e9valuer leur int\u00e9grit\u00e9 \u00e9cologique et la qualit\u00e9 des eaux. Dans cette \u00e9tude, nous avons test\u00e9 le potentiel de plusieurs m\u00e9triques bas\u00e9es sur les communaut\u00e9s planctoniques et benthiques comme bioindicateurs de la biodiversit\u00e9 et de la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau dans 20 plans d\u2019eau (\u00e9tangs, lacs et mar\u00e9cages) de l\u2019\u00eele de Montr\u00e9al. Les m\u00e9triques bas\u00e9es sur la richesse et la composition du phytoplancton, du zooplancton et des macroinvert\u00e9br\u00e9s ont permis de d\u00e9finir la typologie des plans d\u2019eau, en particulier des distinguer les milieux temporaires ou permanents. Les relations entre les m\u00e9triques et les conditions environnementales (origine et am\u00e9nagement des \u00e9tangs, d\u00e9veloppement r\u00e9sidentiel, qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau et eutrophisation) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9termin\u00e9es pour s\u00e9lectionner les meilleurs bioindicateurs \u00e0 utiliser dans les programmes d\u2019\u00e9valuation de la conservation de la biodiversit\u00e9 et de la qualit\u00e9 des eaux des plans d\u2019eau de la ville de Montr\u00e9al.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>15h40: <\/strong><span class=\"clickthis\"><strong>Diversit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifique et fonctionnelle dans les for\u00eats riveraines en milieu urbain<\/strong>\/ Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Brice, St\u00e9phanie Pellerin, Monique Poulin<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">Les for\u00eats riveraines rendent de nombreux services \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques, en plus d\u2019\u00eatre des points chauds de biodiversit\u00e9. Cependant, en milieu urbain, l&rsquo;intensit\u00e9 des perturbations anthropiques peut transformer la composition et le fonctionnement de ces \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes. Ce projet vise \u00e0 comprendre les effets de l\u2019urbanisation \u00e0 la fois sur la diversit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifique et la diversit\u00e9 fonctionnelle des plantes dans les for\u00eats riveraines. \u00c0 cette fin, des inventaires floristiques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9s dans 57 for\u00eats riveraines de la r\u00e9gion de Montr\u00e9al. Afin d&rsquo;\u00e9tudier la variation de la composition fonctionnelle avec l&rsquo;urbanisation, huit traits fonctionnels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 document\u00e9s pour chaque esp\u00e8ce. Chaque for\u00eat a \u00e9t\u00e9 caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par des variables relatives au paysage urbain environnant, aux conditions locales des for\u00eats et aux processus spatiaux g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s par le courant. Ces trois sous-ensembles de variables expliquaient environ 40% de la variation de la composition fonctionnelle des herbac\u00e9es et la majorit\u00e9 de cette variation \u00e9tait spatialement structur\u00e9e (30%). La dispersion par le courant le long des rivi\u00e8res semble donc \u00eatre un processus important dans la structuration des communaut\u00e9s herbac\u00e9es. L&rsquo;\u00e9tude de la diversit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifique a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 de nouveaux aspects de la distribution de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation des for\u00eats riveraines urbaines. Les indices LCBD (local contribution to beta diversity) d\u00e9crivent l&rsquo;unicit\u00e9 de la communaut\u00e9 v\u00e9g\u00e9tale dans chaque for\u00eat. La comparaison avec la richesse en esp\u00e8ces a montr\u00e9 que la LCBD \u00e9tait n\u00e9gativement corr\u00e9l\u00e9e \u00e0 richesse sp\u00e9cifique (r = -0.60). Toutefois, cette relation d\u00e9coulait en fait de la forte corr\u00e9lation n\u00e9gative entre la LCBD et la richesse en esp\u00e8ces indig\u00e8nes (r = -0.68) alors que la corr\u00e9lation avec la richesse en esp\u00e8ces exotiques \u00e9tait nulle. Ainsi, les for\u00eats ayant une composition en esp\u00e8ce unique \u00e9taient souvent tr\u00e8s pauvres en esp\u00e8ces herbac\u00e9es indig\u00e8nes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>16h00: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/qcbs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/PrezColloqueCSBQ-MML.pdf\"><span class=\"clickthis\">La biodiversit\u00e9 des friches urbaines&nbsp;: un attrait pour les usagers\/ Maude L\u00e9onard, M. Juan J. Torres, Danielle Dagenais<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>De nombre<span class=\"collapsethat\">uses recherches indiquent que les friches urbaines v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es abritent une flore et une faune d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat. Par ailleurs, dans plusieurs villes du monde, des friches sont fr\u00e9quent\u00e9es par des usagers. Mais les activit\u00e9s pratiqu\u00e9es et les raisons de l\u2019utilisation de la friche pour ces pratiques sont encore peu connues. Afin de combler cette lacune, une \u00e9tude exploratoire a port\u00e9 sur deux friches fr\u00e9quent\u00e9es&nbsp;: le Champs des possibles dans l\u2019arrondissement Plateau-Mont-Royal et le Bois\u00e9 Jean-Milot dans l\u2019arrondissement Anjou de la ville de Montr\u00e9al. Cette recherche s\u2019inscrit dans une approche qualitative visant \u00e0 comprendre le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne \u00e9tudi\u00e9. Pour ce faire, des entretiens semi-dirig\u00e9s ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9s in situ avec 22 usagers pr\u00e9sentant des profils de pratiques vari\u00e9es. Le contenu des entrevues a \u00e9t\u00e9 soumis \u00e0 une analyse th\u00e9matique. Neuf types de pratiques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9s. Certaines activit\u00e9s sont directement li\u00e9es \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sence de diversit\u00e9 v\u00e9g\u00e9tale et entomologique. Ingo has a background as landscape planner and plant ecologist. His scientific interests focus on (i) urban biodiversity patterns and underlying mechanisms, (ii) impacts of plant invasions inside and outside cities, and (iii) approaches to enhance biodiversity functions within the urban green infrastructure. Ingo also serves as voluntary State Commissioner of Nature Conservation and Landscape Management of the federal state of Berlin. In this function, he has been involved in many processes of developing Berlin\u2019s green infrastructure.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a id=\"Ingop\"><\/a><strong>Integration of biodiversity conservation into urban development: the example of Berlin<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a rapidly urbanizing world, two questions gain increasingly importance: how urban land use types could contribute to biodiversity conservation, and how biodiversity issues can be integrated into urban development. Traditional urban conservation approaches focus on the protection or restoration of natural remnants. The example of Berlin illustrates that both natural remnants and human-modified ecosystems such as parks or novel urban-industrial habitats can harbor a considerably high biological richness, yet with varying conservation functions among ecosystems along a gradient of ecological novelty. These insights led to a diversification of urban conservation strategies in Berlin, with three major approaches: (i) protection of conservation areas since the early 20th century, involving also human-mediated ecosystems; (ii) linking conservation and social issues, and incorporating both into planning instruments since the late 1980es (\u201cLandscape programme\u201d); and (iii), involving a broad range of stakeholders in developing and implementing an urban biodiversity strategy that covers all land use types (since 2010). Experience from Berlin illustrates that cooperation between science, NGOs and politics can successfully enhance a biodiverse urban development.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a id=\"willb\"><\/a>Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Williams<\/strong> is an ecologist who works predominantly in urban areas because although he realises cities cause of many of the world\u2019s environmental problems they offer one of humanity\u2019s best hopes for a sustainable future. Nick seeks to understand urban biodiversity patterns and ecosystem processes and develop applied solutions to reduce negative impacts of urbanization such as biodiversity loss, excess urban heat, stormwater runoff and CO2 emissions. His biodiversity research focuses on vegetation, in particular native grasslands and plant traits, but he has also worked on mammals, molluscs and increasingly with insects. Together with social scientist colleagues Nick has even investigated the most complex aspect of urban environments \u2013 humans! In 2007 he established a research program to develop and evaluate the benefits of green infrastructure, in particular vegetated roofs, as a climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy for Australian cities. Together with colleagues Steve Livesley and John Rayner, Nick leads the Green Infrastructure Research Group (GIRG) at The University of Melbourne. Recent projects include quantifying the biodiversity benefits of urban green space habitats such as gardens, parks and golf courses, developing&nbsp; urban design guidelines to mitigate urban heat and evaluating the effectiveness of wildlife gardening programs. Nick has published over 40 scientific papers and regularly presents his work at national and international conferences.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a id=\"willp\"><\/a>Increasing urban biodiversity habitat using green infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because we cannot create more remnant habitat, biodiversity conservation and enhancement in urban areas will rely on modifying the existing urban green infrastructure in cities so they better support biodiversity. Urban Green infrastructure, the residential yards, parks, recreation areas, street trees, rain gardens and green roofs that make up our cities may support substantial existing biodiversity but often this is a limited suite of species that can cope with altered urban habitats. We have conducted intensive biodiversity surveys in Melbourne\u2019s residential gardens, large urban golf courses, small urban parks and green roofs for a range of fauna taxa and related their diversity to local habitat and landscape&nbsp; characteristics.&nbsp; Golf courses appear to be important reservoirs of urban biodiversity, having the greatest species richness of birds, insect eating bats and bees and abundance of beetles and true bugs.&nbsp; A key to this is greater vegetation structural complexity of native plant species. Un projet de recherche et de sensibilisation \u00e0 l\u2019importance de la diversit\u00e9 en ville \/ Alain Paquette, Christian Messier et Nathalie Lapointe<\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\"><em>In 2009 we established the first of a network of diversity and ecosystem functioning experiments with trees. The International Diversity Experiment Network with Trees (IDENT) now comprises six sites, in both North America and Europe. The first, established in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, has over 12,000 trees of 19 species planted in communities of different composition varying in specific (1 to 12 species) and functional diversity. Early results show that growth and the functioning of the ecosystem are ameliorated with an increase in diversity. The objective of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville project is to bring people to better consider the importance of choosing the right tree and of having a diversity of species with varying ecological characteristics in order to maximise the benefits they provide in the city, for example to our health. The installation is integrated to the <\/em>Parcours Gouin<em> and the <\/em>Maison Verte<em> of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, an integrated conception project. The experiment, to be installed in spring 2015, will include the millionth tree planted for science by the TreeDivNet, of which IDENT is a member. The installation is a spiral that will bring the public to experiment first hand a gradient of increasing diversity in species, forms, and functions, along a path. Many of the few streams that still remain in large cities following development projects have come to resemble open sewers as a result of canalisation, course deviation and human encroachment. In the city of Laval, still today, stream restoration projects have as their principal goal only the regulation of storm water flow to reduce the risk of flooding in urban areas. What are the effects of this type of practice on the ecological dynamics of streams? In addition to their hydrological role, urban streams can, and must, contribute to improved water quality and biological diversity conservation in urban zones; to do so these ecosystems must be ecologically functional. Toward better protection, prevention of further degradation and restoration of such ecosystems, a preliminary evaluation of their ecological state is required. The goal of the current research is to evaluate the ecological state and biodiversity of urban streams in Laval, using both biological and physical indicators linked to quantitative estimates of urbanisation. Jaeger<\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span class=\"collapsethat\">Connectivity is the \"degree to which the landscape facilitates or impedes movement among resource patches\" (Taylor et al. 1993) and can be used to assess the extent to which the built environment permits wildlife and humans to move between habitats and recreational sites. In Southwest Montreal, a greenway network has been proposed to improve access to these spaces. Plans for residential development on the site of the Meadowbrook Golf Course may however, compromise the viability of this network by decreasing access to high quality habitat and public space. Connectivity for this network was measured using the effective mesh size (meff); a metric implemented as Indicator 2 of the City Biodiversity Index (CBI). We applied this method to assess the role of the Meadowbrook golf course for the connectivity of the greenway network in Southwest Montreal and the effect that its development would have, comparing various scenarios. Current and potential future levels of connectivity were measured for spaces used by wildlife and by urban residents. Presently, spaces available for wildlife are limited and somewhat isolated due to large distances and structures, such as roads, that impede movement between them. However, the identification of sites to be enhanced or established as habitats or recreational zones in the future exposed the possibility to increase connectivity substantially in the network. The destruction of Meadowbrook would eliminate its large potential to serve as a vital component of this greenway network in the future. Vereecken, Chris Buddle, Val\u00e9rie Fournier<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">Urbanization is one of the most pervasive anthropogenic processes contributing to local habitat losses and extirpation of lots of species. Wild bees are the most widespread pollinators, but little information is known about the mechanisms of urbanization affecting the wild bee communities and which kinds of urban green spaces are contributing the most to their conservation in cities. Yet, in Canada, no extensive study on urban wild bees has been conducted. The main objective of this study was to describe and compare wild bee community diversity, composition, and dynamics in two cities \u2013 Montr\u00e9al and Qu\u00e9bec City. These components of biodiversity were measured in three kinds of habitats \u2013 cemeteries, community gardens, and urban parks \u2013 and their conservation value is also discussed. The bees were collected with pan traps and active netting in 2012 and 2013 using 46 sites each year. A total of 32 237 specimens from 200 species and 6 families were identified. Despite good community evenness, we found a significant occurrence of dominant and exotic species. Moreover, the spatio-temporal analysis displaying the wild bee community stability shows unique dynamics for each city. This demonstrates that cities can sustain a highly diverse community of wild bees, but also impacts their community structure. Finally, our results reveal that community gardens harbour the highest functional diversity. Growing up in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue since he was a small child, he has explored the area since he was old enough to be left alone with his friends to explore the woods. Today he continues to explore the area as a birder and naturalist and monitors and maintains over 20 Wood Duck nestboxes. Therefore it is necessary to develop knowledge on aquatic ecosystems in large cities in order to select the best bioindicators for assessing their ecological integrity, and particularly their water quality. In this study, we tested the potential of metrics based on plankton and benthic communities as useful bioindicators to evaluate biodiversity and water quality in 20 urban waterbodies (ponds, lakes and wetlands) of the Island of Montr\u00e9al. Metrics based on the richness and composition of phytoplankton, zooplankton and macroinvertebrates served to distinguish specific groups of permanent and temporary waterbodies. Despite their location in an urban landscape and the consequently human stressors, waterbodies in Montr\u00e9al are essential habitats for sustaining aquatic biodiversity at local and regional scales, as showed for pelagic and benthic communities. Aquatic vegetation in littoral habitats constitutes an important refuge for biodiversity, and temporary ponds offer unique conditions for very rare species. However, in urban areas, the intensity of human disturbance can transform the composition and functioning of these ecosystems. This project aims to understand the effects of urbanization on both species diversity and functional diversity of plants in riparian forests. To this end, floristic inventories were carried out in 57 riparian forests in the Montreal region. In order to study the change in combinations with urbanization, eight functional traits were documented for each species. Each forest has been characterized by variables related to the surrounding urban landscape, local forest conditions and spatial processes generated by stream. These three variables subsets explained about 40% of the variation of the functional composition of the herbaceous and the majority of this variation was spatially structured (30%). The dispersion along the stream appears to be an important process in structuring plant communities. The study of species diversity revealed new aspects of the distribution of vegetation in urban riparian forests. The LCBD indices (local contribution to beta diversity) describe the uniqueness of the plant community in each forest. The comparison with species richness showed that LCBD was negatively correlated with species richness (r = -0.60). This relationship was mostly linked to the strong negative correlation between LCBD and native species richness (r = -0.68), while the correlation with the exotic species richness was nil. Juan J. Torres, Danielle Dagenais<\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"collapsethat\">Multiple studies indicate that urban fallow areas with a plant cover hold flora and fauna of interest. Moreover, in many cities throughout the world, such lands are also utilized by humans for multiple purposes. These purposes for use and associated activities are still relatively unknown. In order to fill this knowledge gap, an exploratory study was conducted in two fallow areas with user groups: the Champ des Possibles in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough and the Bois\u00e9 Jean-Milot in the Anjou borough of the City of Montreal. For this work, we used a qualitative approach. We conducted 22 semi structured interviews with users representing different profile groups. Interview materials were analysed thematically. Nine practice types were identified. Some activities were directly linked to plant and insect diversity. The wild and spontaneous nature, the plant structure and the diversity of ambiances associated with biodiversity found in these areas were perceived as important qualities by users. Our cases indicate that fallow areas are indeed important green spaces, complementary to urban parks.
