What is R ?
R is a free and open source computer language. It allows you to manipulate data, conduct statistical analysis and produce publication ready graphical interpretations of your data (plots). It offers an alternative to many commercially available packages (eg. SPSS, Sigma Plot, SAS…). As a language, it requires users to input text commands which can be daunting at first, hence our workshops. Many would-be-R-users are scared away by the blank “The Matrix” worthy screen awaiting their input when you first open R. With our help, you will rapidly see that inputing commands beats using your mouse for statistical analysis (for ease of use and power).
This workshop introduces users to the power of R and helps them overcome the steepest part of the R learning curve (getting started).
This workshop is in three sections:
- First baby steps in R
- Getting data into R and manipulating it
- Producing beautiful plots in R (with ggplot2)
Above and beyond our expertise in R, we pride ourselves in our pedagogical approaches. We will insure you have fun while learning and that the skills acquired will be lasting. To facilitate this, we recommend you come with your laptop loaded with all the amazing fun data you have collected and install R (http://cran.r-project.org) et RStudio (http://rstudio.org).
