Microplastics in freshwater food webs
Tiny plastic particles known as microplastics were found in the sediments of the St-Laurent river in 2013. Organisms such as the round gobies were observed to ingest these small debris. The aim of this project is to shed light on the impact of the ingestion of microplastics on invertebrate and fish communities in the St-Lawrence watershed. Through our work, we will quantify the abundance and diversity of microplastic particles ingested by these animals, evaluate the impacts of the ingestion of microplastics on key species within the food web and determine how these particles can be transferred across the food chain.
