Project

Effects of parasites on behavioural diversity
The aim of this project is to better understand the evolutionary consequences of parasites on animal cognition and behavioral strategies. Indeed, parasite avoidance behaviors are critical in determining infection and survival of hosts evolving in parasitized environments. However, such behaviors require cognitive abilities, such as recognition and discrimination of conspecifics. We thus propose that parasites act as selective agents on behaviorail and cognitive traits and more specifically on i) their ability to discriminate infected conspecifics, ii) their sociability iii) and risk-taking behaviors. Moreover, we propose that such effects would iii) be modulated by inter-individual variability in physiological immune resistance, therefore influencing the evolution of personalities and life-history strategies in the wild.
