Semaine de la Biodiversite
day 19 mai 2013 - samedi 25 mai 2013, Saint-Laurent, Montreal

Semantics for Biodiversity' (S4BioDiv)
day 26 mai 2013 - Lundi 27 mai 2013, Montpellier, France
The first international workshop on 'Semantics for Biodiversity' (S4BioDiv) will be held on May 26/27, 2013, preceding the 10th ESWC 2013 -‘Semantics and Big Data’, Montpellier, France.
Semantic web standards, tools, ontologies and related technologies have considerably matured in the recent years. Nowadays, accessing a wide catalogue of biological, social, environmental, and ecological data sources helps stakeholders working on biodiversity to answer their complex questions. Will the real time access to web resources effectively support the definition of strategies to conserve and manage biodiversity? How might semantic web technologies help us to handle the complex and heterogeneous big data related to biodiversity?
The workshop aims to identify the key challenges faced by the bioinformatics community, discuss potential solutions and identify the opportunities emerging from the trans-disciplinary interactions between Plant Science and Informatics experts. Therefore, we expect the bioinformatics experts to explain how they apply semantic web standards and tools to their scientific topic, from biology, agriculture, agro-ecology, genomics, environmental studies, to social sciences, citizen sciences.
Research papers presenting various aspects of semantic web technologies applied to biodiversity data, ranging from position papers to implemented systems descriptions and their evaluation, will be selected. We are particularly interested in the use of the semantic technologies to design and develop systems that supports research on agricultural and wild biodiversity conservation and management for food security. Examples may include strategies for resilience to climate change pressures, sustainability of productive ecosystems, ecosystems services monitoring or territories management, rather than systems supporting only research on climate patterns or soil erosion.

The Trondheim Conference in 2013 will explore how to cut development pathways towards a sustainable society by aligning policy, business, economy and ecology across borders, scales and systems.
Participation and registration
Participation in the conference is by invitation only. Each country has been invited to send two experts, one from each field of biodiversity and economy/planning. Invitees may register for the conference on the

Plant Genome Evolution 2013
day 08 septembre 2013 - mardi 10 septembre 2013, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
It is our pleasure to announce the second Current Opinion Conference on Plant Genome Evolution, to be held in Amsterdam, September 8-10th, 2013. We are delighted to be holding this (now biannual) event again after a very successful first meeting in 2011 where renowned plant researchers gave inspiring talks and where many discussed their latest research in the field.
For the 2013 meeting, which will be at least half a day longer, we are even more ambitious and are trying to put together an even more exciting program focused on plant genomes, natural variation, and systems biology, of course all with a strong emphasis on evolution and evolutionary aspects.
This meeting will be the unique opportunity to meet and discuss with colleagues, get updated on the newest developments and insights in plant genome evolution, and will provide unique possibilities to network and discuss collaborations. Also, we are delighted already that Prof. Doug Soltis (University of Florida, USA) has agreed to deliver the plenary lecture on Sunday, opening the meeting.

PROTECTING THE SACRED:Recognition of Sacred Sites of Indigenous Peoples for Sustaining Nature and Cu
mercredi 11 septembre 2013 - vendredi 13 septembre 2013, Rovaniemi and Pyhä, Finland
The conference brings together scientists, sacred natural sites custodians, Indigenous Peoples’ Organizations, policy makers, conservation and civil society leaders, to evaluate options for international and national law, policy and practice in order to better recognize, safeguard, conserve and manage Sacred Natural Sites (SNS) of Indigenous Peoples in Northern and Arctic regions.
SNS are being increasingly recognized as an important means for the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, and the transmission of culture and identity. Yet, legal protection of SNS and related policies are still often insufficient or absent. It becomes increasingly difficult for custodians in the North to protect these ancient sites, due to economic developments (tourism, mining, forestry) and infrastructural development (roads, dams, mega projects). At the same time the need for protection may be challenged by some protection measures (identifying of location, mapping) and may raise the question of keeping intimacy and sensitivity of these places.
At international level, SNS have been receiving increasing legal attention; they are now mentioned in several international legal instruments (e.g., CBD, UNDRIP). Yet, effective and culturally appropriate implementation is often still lacking.

Sixth International Poplar Symposium (IPS-VI)
day 20 juillet 2014 - Lundi 28 juillet 2014, Vancouver, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada
The proposed conference theme is based on a very relevant question:
Domestication of Populus and Salix: How far have we come, and how far do we still have to go?
The meeting in Vancouver will bring us an excellent opportunity to compare our views and assemble the “right answer.” The answer will represent the view of the people
interested in the science of poplar and willow genetics, physiology and pathology. It will serve as a guide for the future of poplar and willow cultivation in the world. Ultimately, the answer should also be a guide for the amelioration of the environment, industries, and the standard of living of rural communities wherever poplars and willows are cultivated. This symposium strives to address these issues and therefore invites researchers,
practitioners, regulatory and policy experts to help define what the challenges are and where we are going.
